Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Saint Leo

Sharks are now 12-14 overall.

ST. LEO, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team split their Saturday doubleheader against Saint Leo, winning the first game, 3-2, and dropping the second by the same score.

Game One

The Sharks took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Lorena Spaulding (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) set up the scoring play by reaching first base on an error and advanced to second on the throw. Next at-bat, Erika Garcia (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) notched her first RBI of the day with a single to the right side.

In the second, the Lions connected with the ball three times for back-to-back RBI's and a 2-1 lead. Garcia, who was also in the circle for Sharks and allowed six hits in the game, walked Cassie Boggs to first. Angela Kafales came up next and tripled down the left field line to bring Boggs home. Next at-bat, Tiffany Thompson notched the second RBI in a row as Saint Leo took the lead.

NSU regained took the advantage in the third. As in the first inning, Spaulding reached first on an error. Garcia notched a RBI double to right field, tying the score at 2. With one out on the board, Gina Bondarenko (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) grounded out to second base, allowing Courtney Bridge (Jr., Port Coquitlam, Canada) enough to time to get to home.

The defense would hold the Lions for the remainder of the game, giving the Sharks the 3-2 win. Garcia went the distance for the victory.

Game Two

The game was held scoreless until the Sharks found the bat three times in the top of the fourth inning. Rebecca Thornton (Fr., Lodi, Cali.), who went 2-for-4 in the game, notched her first single, going to left field to set the Sharks up for the scoring play. Tanaka would follow and draw a walk.

With Maegan Lee (Jr., Miami, Fla.) at bat, Bridge pinch-running for Thornton, and Tanaka each stole a base, putting the Sharks in prime scoring position. Lee singled to center field to bring Bridge in, giving the Sharks the 1-0 lead. Taylor Rotz(Fr., Pittsburg, Penn.) was next, and filled the bases up with a single to left center. Carly Comito (Fr., Boca Raton, Fla.) would then be walked, forcing in Tanaka and putting the Sharks up, 2-1.

The Sharks held the 2-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Sarah Steiner and Cassie Boggs took the lead from the Sharks and put two more on the board for Saint Leo.

The Sharks could not take the lead back and fell to Saint Leo, 3-2.
